A Year with Rumi

I've been playing guitar for a year and a half now. At first it was pure love and I easily played nearly every day, but of course with time enthusiasm fades. It is no longer a new discovery. However this morning I felt love and joy while playing and I was reminded of of a quote from one of my all-time favorite books - The Prophet by Khalil Gibran, "Work is Love Made Visible." Today I felt this love because I had done the work of printing out a bunch of new music to learn. And I had done the work of trying songs that were too hard for me, and then trying them again. And I had done the work of simply picking up the guitar and strumming, because often starting is the hardest part.

Speaking of my favorite books. I'm rereading
I read it in 2009, then lent it to the friend whose guitar I still have. I took it back this year to reread. I enjoy it so much I usually read the day's poem as soon as I get up and again before sleep.

Today begins

"Imagine a man selling his donkey
to be with Jesus.

Now imagine him selling Jesus
to get a ride on a donkey.
This does happen..."

I was working on my poems, I forget how I ended up here. Anyway, I think on a basic level they are in good shape. Every time I look at them I change things, but at the moment I am feeling satisfied with where they are at.

Two more gratitudes - I think I'll have at least one friend listening to the This American Life show today, which I greatly appreciate.

And I finally remembered to wash my gloves with my laundry, possibly for the first time.

  1. Hi Tammy,

I saw you message on my (ex-)blog just now, as I've had a broken internetconnection and I've been abroad for a while (yeah, Italy. I'm desperately trying to find a job to be able to move over there, but I'm getting no results at all... It's true that money doesn't bring happiness but if lack of money prevents people who love each other to be togehter, it's very frustrating.)

But finally here I am to wish you a wonderful 2012. Wonderful in the literal meaning of the word: full of wonders. And knowing the way you look at the world, I'm confident you'll see a lot of them.

    warm hugs,
    stephanie
